Red Hat System Administration I (RH124) is the first course in Red Hat’s core system administration training track, designed for IT professionals without previous Linux experience. This lab-based course provides students with Linux administration skills by focusing on core administration tasks, such as managing files, controlling services, and configuring Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

RH124 provides a foundation for students who plan to become full-time Linux system administrators and is the first step toward earning the Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) credential. The journey continues with Red Hat System Administration II (RH134).

Who Should Attend

This course is geared toward Windows system administrators, network administrators, and other system administrators who are interested in supplementing current skills or backstopping other team members, in addition to Linux system administrators who are responsible for these tasks: Configuring, installing, upgrading, and maintaining Linux systems using established standards and procedures, Providing operational support, Managing systems for monitoring system performance and availability, Writing and deploying scripts for task automation and system administration.

Course Objectives

    You’ll develop real-world Linux administration skills that serve as the foundation for continued Red Hat training and RHCSA certification.

    • Access the Linux command line and run administrative commands
    • Manage users, groups, file permissions, and authentication
    • Monitor system services and control processes using systemd
    • Configure network settings and secure remote access with SSH
    • Install, update, and manage software using the DNF package manager

Other Prerequisites

•Previous operating system administration experience is helpful but not required

Course Outline

1 – Get started with Linux systems

  • Describe open source, Linux ecosystems, and Red Hat’s role

2 – Access the command line

  • Log in, interact with the shell, run commands

3 – Manage files from the command line

  • Create, copy, move, and delete files/directories; use wildcards

4 – Get help in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

  • Use man, info, and built-in documentation tools

5 – Create, view, and edit text files

  • Redirect output, use editors to update configs

6 – Manage local users and groups

  • Create and manage users/groups, enforce password policies

7 – Control access to files

  • Set permissions and ownership, apply access control

8 – Monitor performance & processes

  • View/manage processes; evaluate resource usage

9 – Control services and daemons

  • Use systemctl to manage services at runtime and boot

10 – Configure and secure SSH access

  • Enable and configure SSH client/server settings

11 – Analyze and store system logs

  • Use journalctl and view log data for troubleshooting

12 – Manage networking

  • Configure IP, DNS, hostnames, test connectivity

13 – Install and update software

  • Use DNF to install/remove packages and manage repos

14 – Access Linux file systems

  • Understand mounting, partitions, and filesystem hierarchy
  • Monitor disk space and access storage

15 – Analyze systems & get support

  • Use web console and tools to evaluate system health
  • Generate support data and access Red Hat resources

16 – Comprehensive review

  • Reinforce key topics through lab exercises and prep for RH134
